The watermark looks like a simple overlay sitting on top of a video, but what happens behind the scenes is more involved than most people realize. Once a clip is watermarked, the file itself is genuinely different from the version that was originally uploaded.

The Logo Gets Baked Into the Frames

A watermark isn't a separate layer you can peel off — it's rendered directly into the video's pixels during processing. Every single frame is redrawn to include the moving logo and username, which means the watermark becomes a permanent part of the visual data rather than something added on top afterward.

The Video Gets Re-Encoded

To bake that overlay into the footage, the file has to be decoded and recompressed. This re-encoding step is the part that matters most for quality, because video compression is lossy — some visual information is discarded every time a file is compressed, even slightly. A watermarked file has effectively been compressed twice: once during the original upload, and again to stamp the logo on.

File Size and Metadata Shift Too

Because the encoding settings used for the watermark pass aren't always identical to the original upload settings, file size can change, sometimes shrinking to keep the app's delivery fast. Metadata tags — such as the export source or app version — can also be added at this stage, which helps distinguish a watermarked file from an untouched original.
